(Miami Springs, February 2012) – Eight teams from across Miami-Dade County competed in the Junior Orange Bowl JV Boys Basketball Tournament, over the weekend of Feb 3-4, at the Miami Springs Recreation Center. Coral Gables Senior High defeated Hialeah Gardens 42-41 to win the tournament championship (highlights here). Norland defeated Carol City in the third place game 54-32, Columbus came in fifth by beating Mater Academy 46-41, and Palmetto finished seventh after edging out Coral Reef 63-61.

The tournament also featured an educational seminar by 10 year NBA veteran, Wali Jones. Jones, who has worked for the Miami Heat for 20 years as a scout and community affairs liaison, spoke to all the teams and coaches at the tournament, stressing the importance of education to further athletic and personal goals. His full presentation can be seen here (part 2, part 3).

This was the first year the Junior Orange Bowl held a JV Basketball Tournament and tournament director Chuck Little hopes to add a Girls JV Tournament to next year’s schedule. Still to come this year is the Junior Orange Bowl Middle School Basketball Tournament, which will be held in early April. Visit www.jrorangebowl.org for more information.
