Jr. Orange Bowl 49th International Tennis Championship Round 2 Results

(CORAL GABLES, DEC 19, 2010) – The 49th Junior Orange Bowl resumed on Sunday with the second round of the main draws following a rain out Saturday.

Top-seeded Joshua Sapwell of Great Britain cruised past Alfredo Perez in the boys 14 & under, 6-2, 6-2, and will face Latvia's Arturs Lazdins in the third round. The most notable upset in the boys U14 bracket was Hawaii's Zandrix Acob, seeded 7th, falling to Russia's Alexander Zverev, 6-2, 6-3.

Girls 14 & under No. 1 seed Barbara Haas of Austria moved on to round three in straight sets against Russia's Polina Yuzefovich, 6-3, 6-1.

“I wasn't in such great rhythm, because I really hadn't played tennis in two days,” Haas said of her match following the brief layoff. “This was a really tough match [at first], but after it got to within 4-3 [in the second set] I made it pretty easy.”

While many of the other seeded players in the girls U14 advanced, third-seeded Tornado Ali Black of Boca Raton was forced to retire due to injury in the second set of her match against Tampa's Rianna Valdes.

Valdes outlasted Black in an epic first set that required 13 tiebreaking points, then led 3-0 in the second set before the retirement.

In the boys U12, all but one of the seeded players advanced, including Maryland's Michael Mmoh, who did so in three sets over fellow Marylander Francis Tiafoe, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

One of the more exciting matches in the girls 12 & under field was a three-set nailbiter between seeded Ena Delibegovic of Herzegovina and Mexico's Costanza Gorches. Delibegovic advanced, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The third round of the main draw continues on Monday at the following four venues: boys 14 & under (University of Miami Tennis Center), girls 14 & under (Biltmore Tennis Center), boys 12 & under (Tropical Park Tennis Center), and girls 12 & under (Salvadore Park).
