Jr. Orange Bowl 49th International Tennis Championship Girls U12 Finals Results
(CORAL GABLES, DEC 22, 2010) – Three classic finals matchups were set and a girls 12 & under champion was crowned on Wednesday at the 49th Junior Orange Bowl Tennis Championship.
The most entertaining duel of the day was a girls 14 & under showdown between top-seeded Barbara Haas of Austria and Ecuador's Domenica Gonzalez Palau. Gonzalez Palau lost the opening set but rallied to win a pair of tiebreakers to advance to Thursday's final against Indianapolis' Brooke Austin.
“There's never been a player from Ecuador make it to the finals, so I'm honored to be the first,” an exhausted Gonzalez Palau said after her 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(1) victory. Her finals opponent Austin advanced by beating Russia's Varvara Flink in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.
“It's really exciting [to be in the finals], because the Orange Bowl is one of the biggest tournaments in the world,” said Austin, who was last year's runner-up. Austin reached the 2009 finals by beating Gonzalez Palau in the semis.
The boys U14 championship game will feature No. 1 Joshua Sapwell of Great Britain (a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Chile's Christian Garin) and Croatia's Borna Coric (7-6(5), 6-1 over Belgium's Clement Geens).
Meanwhile, a champion was crowned in the girls 12 & under bracket as Massachusetts' Nicole Frenkel ousted Russia's Yulia Bryzgalova in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Michael Mmoh of Maryland and Chan Yeong Oh of Korea square off in the boys 12 & under championship match Thursday as both won in straight sets in their semifinal matches. Mmoh was victorious over Sweden's Mikael Wondwosen, 6-2, 6-1, while Oh defeated Chicago's Michal Kusznerko, 6-1, 6-4.
“When I was young I would just sit and watch the Orange Bowl finals and wish I could be there. Now I am, and it's a dream come true,” Mmoh said.
All three of Thursday's finals will be played at the University of Miami Tennis Center. The girls U14 and boys U12 will start at 9 AM and the boys U14 will start at 10:30.
